he uses a looper pedal more differently than any guitar player i've seen - he will use it to establish a pedal point, instead of using it to play a chord progression to solo over
this means he can work chords into his improvisations over this pedal point, which also means he can play different chords to make sections feel different
one thing that makes looper music dull is that if you just loop a chord progression, there's no way to change chords and create movement in a song. by using the looper for a pedal point instead he gets around this. rather brilliant
